This tweet, by Australian TV personality David Koch, is not ok. The fact it is his “joke of the day” suggests it wasn’t a slip of the tongue, but something he considered and planned, and was comfortable .
The reasons why this is not ok should be abundantly clear, but since Koch clearly didn’t consider them, here’s a very brief refresher:
1. Women have, historically, been an oppressed group, We have a long history of being given limited opportunity, being abused, marginalised, and not respected. Comparing us to animals, treating us as a single group, and condemning us for unavoidable biological traits is continuing this tradition of marginalisation and oppression.
2. Women continue to struggle, on a daily basis, against a sexism that is rampant in our society. We get paid less for the same work. And we have to deal with the impression that we are irrational and overly emotional, and thus not able to hold down top jobs. Implying we are “mad cows” does nothing to help us.
But what I find more concerning, is the fact that he considered it appropriate to make such a comment and not fear backlash. People within the community who have a vested interest in maintaining the gender status quo have so marginalised feminism that, inevitably, complaints about such comments are people “taking themselves too seriously.” And so we have created a society in which people can make such comments without fear of repercussion.
I sincerely hope there’s as much outrage about this tweet as there was about Stephanie Rice’s. It is at least as bad and, if anything, worse, because it was premeditated.
That is insulting
